“For as long as I've known Adam Caine — which is around 20 years now — I've always been impressed by his openness as an artist and guitarist, the way he never puts himself in any kind of stylistic box. Much like his great 2006 trio record Pipe, Transmissions covers a broad aesthetic range in a way that feels both perfectly natural and appealingly enigmatic. I love the contrast, for example, between the brawny, Tribute to Jack Johnson–esque jamming of "The Core" and the elegance and reserve of tracks like "Night Driver" and "The Girls," which have a spare, poetic quality that reminds me of Jimmy Giuffre's classic late-'50s trios with Jim Hall. There's also fuzzed-out funk ("The Spiral"), beautifully airy swing in a Paul Motian Trio vein ("Cloud Over") and warped long-form abstraction that would make late out-guitar legend Masayuki Takayanagi proud ("Hell Awaits").
What's so impressive is that this excellent band — with Snarky Puppy co-founder Bob Lanzetti also on guitar, eminent avant-jazz bassist Adam Lane, and wizardly drum veteran Billy Mintz, plus the liquid-toned alto saxist Nick Lyons guesting on one track— moves between styles without the slightest bit of fuss. They engage completely with the needs of each piece while retaining a quality of patience and deep listening that runs throughout the record. I have no idea how to sum up Transmissions as a whole, other than to say it's an album of subtle, thoughtful, surprising instrumental music for two guitars, bass and drums. In other words, it's an Adam Caine record through and through.”
